A continuation-in-part (CIP) application adds new subject matter to the disclosure of a parent application while keeping the earlier priority date for the original material.
Why It Matters Legally
A CIP lets inventors patent improvements made after the original filing, but only the original material keeps the early priority date. Misunderstanding which claims get which date can be costly in litigation.

An inventor improves a patented engine after filing and submits a CIP to cover both the original design and the new improvement.
