Inter partes review (IPR) is a proceeding before the PTAB where a third party challenges the validity of a granted patent based on prior patents and printed publications.
Why It Matters Legally
An IPR can knock out a patent faster and more cheaply than court litigation, and the PTAB uses standards that often favor challengers. For patent owners, an IPR is a serious threat to a key asset.

A startup accused of infringement files an IPR petition arguing the patent’s claims were obvious over earlier publications, and the PTAB cancels the claims.
